Our Story

Born of the Volcano. Raised by the Fire.

The kiawe tree put down roots in Hawaiian lava rock nearly two hundred years ago and never let go. Its wood grew dense and slow under the island sun — and islanders discovered that when it burns, it gives back everything it soaked up: heat, sweetness, and a smoke like nothing else on earth.

We'll say it plainly: we're guests of these islands — no island blood, just island years — and we know it. But the Pacific runs three generations deep in this family. All four of the founder's grandparents were at Pearl Harbor when the bombs fell on December 7, 1941 — two Navy men, a Marine who outranked the sailor she'd one day marry, and a homemaker who held it all together. The founder's father was born on Guam and went to elementary school there. A grandfather — the adopted son of a Navy captain posted to Samoa — grew up on that island, and when the service years were behind the family, he kept crossing back to Hawaii anyway, more than thirty times. None of those trips were orders. All of them were love.

The father fell so hard for Hawaii's reef fish that he spent a lifetime carving them: a world champion fish carver whose award-winning reef scenes — every scale cut by hand, out of wood — began with the islands. The founder's first birthday was spent in Hawaii, and the trips never stopped: decades of going back to surf and spearfish. So maybe this company was inevitable. One generation carved Hawaii's fish out of wood. The next one cooks over it. We come to this fire with respect — for the wood, for the traditions it carries, and for the people who tended it first.

We harvest kiawe in Hawaii and process it ourselves in small batches — sun-dried, milled and pressed by hand, and packed in kraft paper. No plastic. No filler. No shortcuts.

Millions of Americans own a smoker. Almost none of them have tasted this wood. That felt like something worth fixing.
